“A savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:8-20)

Immediately after Jesus is born in Luke 2:7, we have the response of the angels and the shepherds. The angels announce to the frightened shepherds the good news of the birth of a savior. The angels declare,

“Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11)

This savior, they declare, “has been born for you.” And what qualifies him to be our savior? He is Christ the Lord. He is Messiah, Yahweh himself. He is more than qualified to be our savior. As John declared in the opening of his gospel, the Word who became flesh is God himself. When God chose to act on our behalf, he sent the very best, himself. We have a qualified savior, one who will meet our deepest spiritual need. God has taken matters into his own hand.

There can only be one response to this good news that God has send a savior, who is God himself:

13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased” (Luke 2:13-14).

The shepherds then go and investigate and when they found the baby as told, they too went away praising and glorifying God and also telling others (Luke 2:16-18, 20). And Mary treasured it all in (Luke 2:19).

We should glorify God, tell others, and marvel at the work of God for us.
